after some stress about the weather, it turned out to be a most perfect fall evening. actually, no one would believe that it was days away from October based on how warm and sunny it was. this family was so much fun, and the children were absolutely wonderful. here are just a few from a crazy number of images in this families gallery.

gramma

my gramma died a week ago, and i was with my mom when she received the phone call. she was prepared for her mothers death, but hearing the words on the phone, still took my mom’s breath away. my grandmother was a spectacular lady, she lost her husband and was left to raise five daughters. my grandmother, as a single parent, went on to have a very distinguished career in nursing in alberta, all the while raising some pretty amazing kids. she had a beautiful heart and was so very generous with her love, she made the best cinnamon buns in the world and my memories of her teaching me how to make them when i was about 12, will forever be in my mind . i hope she was proud of her life when she reflected on it, 5 wonderful daughters, 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

indian summer

we had a perfect summer night, there was no way to tell by the weather, that fall was only days away. i loved meeting one of my favorite families at my new favorite beach for their annual photos. i think it is so amazing this family has their photos done each year. such a great way to watch their perfectly polite children grow. i say it every year, but this might just be my favorite session yet. both kids loved to explore the rocks and tidal pools and i adored their imaginations and it was a pleasure to watch them play. i hope they enjoyed their hard earned ice cream cones that were waiting when we finished

she is hard to describe, she is hard to reason with, she is hard to rationalize with…. this is one child who was born to be a hippy. happiest without clothing on, happiest without shoes, and most definitely happiest when a mess. she sure is cute and sure is perfectly content wearing a white dress while blackberry picking. or shall i say blackberry eating! my dear sweet niece, indie.

special time of year

our family loves when it is blackberry season. each year we venture out to our favorite picking spot in the whole city. it might seem like a strange location to anyone else, but to our family it is special. we head to the cemetery in royal oak. the kids grandma valerie is there. she died before they were born. she died before i could meet her. the first couple years i know how sad it was for my husband to bring the kids to the grave, i know what he was thinking as the kids ran around and around in the grass, squishing blackberries into their mouths and laughing and playing. i always found it amazing how happy the kids were there visiting and eating blackberries and asking questions. they also got so much joy picking out the most beautiful flowers to bring with them. our outings were always special, aside from a few tears, it really has been a good place for our family. blackberries are ripe at valeries birthday, the anniversary of her death and also when our flower farm across the street has the most beautiful lilies in bloom. they were her favorite flowers. it makes those berries extra special in our house. today we baked a blackberry cake, the recipe i adapted slightly from smitten kitchen. served with a bit of lemon yogurt on top.

nothing better then coming home and finding your friend visiting with a brand new 8 week old puppy. chocolate lab puppies are just so darn cute, he loved biting lola’s fur on her paws and tail and chasing her around the yard and then of course a long nap after all that play. so very adorable.

summer vacation

wow, longest road trip ever. we did so much, went so many places and had so much fun. we spent time with very good friends, went to what might be the best family reunion ever, visited dinosaurs and dug for fossils, hung out with sisters and cousins and shopped. we drove through beautiful mountain passes, almost ran out of gas in the car, did run out of gas in the middle of a lake in our boat and laughed a lot. thank goodness we still have two weeks left before the kids go back to school as i am just not ready for this summer to end. here are a few photos from our kelowna adventures with our favorite family friends in the world. they are not only the greatest of friends but the greatest hosts ever and always make sure we have the best summer holiday. lots of pool time, sunshine, margaritas and candy. we will miss you very much. xoxo

just for fun

the children’s piano teacher is also a terrific photographer. she has mentioned several times that she wanted to borrow my daughter to photograph her in the past, recently we started talking about our cameras and she was asking some questions about the differences between my nikon’s and her canon and we decided rather then to talk about it, we would head to the beach and switch cameras and see the difference. it turned out to be a great experience and i most definitely learned that i am thankful for my full frame, but other than that, they are both terrific cameras. always a pleasure to have my daughter and her wonderful friend gabriela along to provide such cute subjects to practice on. once jaime has her images edited, i will post a link to her blog so you can see her wonderful images. i didn’t shoot very many last night as she was doing most of the shooting and i had a little peek at her images last night and they are so adorable. i can’t wait to see them on her blog. i had a chance to try the new solstice actions by red leaf studios on these images. they were perfect on these light and airy summer beach images. my daughter loved how they made the pinks especially pink. I used summer glow on some and cotton fields at about 40 percent opacity, after running color 400 from the film solution actions. here is a link to jaime’s lovely photos of the girls and her very generous and kind words.

a windy engagement

i have known this couple for close to ten years, when i met them the other night something struck me as odd, as i was standing there disheveled and barely matching in my clothing… that i have aged ten years since we have met, but they have not. it has to be kids. yes thats it. i am going to believe that. they are still as beautiful as when we first met and as genuine and wonderful i loved hanging out with them and truly enjoyed taking their long overdue engagement photos. they tried to make me believe that they took horrible photos, that they were stiff and uncomfortable in photos, but they must have been kidding. they looked lovely and relaxed. the wedding will be simply gorgeous.
