local rhubarb

i think i have to stop buying rhubarb. the problem is i pass this little market a few times a week on the way to the beach with the puppy. it sells the most beautiful and delicious rhubarb. it is growing right outside the vegetable stand and i can not resist. it doesn’t sound like such a bad problem to have but it is….  i keep baking. first it was an upside down cake. it was delicious. then i made these rustic tarts with home made vanilla custard and then i taught my kids how to really eat rhubarb, by cleaning a stalk and while still wet with cold water, dipping it into a tiny little cup of sugar. they thought i was crazy handing them white sugar. they kept looking at me like they were going to get in trouble by dipping it into the sugar. i laughed and told them that you are supposed to do that with rhubarb. i remember doing the exact same thing when we stole rhubarb from the gardens of neighbours. i keep debating planting some in my new garden but then i wonder if that is such a good idea.

May 10, 2011 - 5:44 am Paul - Aaah yes I remember eating rhubarb with a pot of sugar straight off my dads allotment when I was a kid, and my kids did too from my 'lottie'. I love what the acid does to your teeth texture! Those tarts look amazing ! I can almost taste the vanilla custard. I only do savoury cooking but these make me want to try making these tarts... :) PS Keep it going, you're not missing a thing!
